ABOUT SURYA
SURYA (2020/21)
I hope your sense of humor is active, as this is rather a joke. I am trying to “sell” you the sunlight. Buy it!
In this project, I explored what it could mean to me, to be a Latin American woman born in Tunja, Colombia by looking into my ancestors craft. I reflected upon the new spiritual practices I was integrating in my daily life; and I allowed myself to embody playfulness in my artistic production. I looked into my beauty and what femininity was supposed to be. I continue to play…
The goldsmith culture of the pre-Columbian indigenous in Colombia of the Cundiboyacense highlands, inspired part of this project, especially the Muisca culture, ancestral residents of my place of origin. (Tunja, Boyacá, Colombia).

The name of the work is part of the strong influence of the Hindu culture on my spiritual practices, with yoga and the asanas of Surya Namaskar (Salute to the sun).

Taking the body as a medium and altering my appearance rather excessively in photoshop,I emphasized the manipulation of the female image for commercial purposes. The new forms of market, mainly online, made my website a suitable canvas for the work. The critics Laugh (1971-2), by the English artist Richard Hamilton, has been one of the most important references regarding the medium and its criticism.
With basic notions about marketing, I decided to create a brand and generate a product not susceptible to buying and selling; And by studying some of the forms of online jewelry marketing and exposure, I saw an opportunity to link my work with Richard Hamilton’s concept and his more refined English humor.
This project has emerged from the observation of recent recurring elements in my search for plastic expression: light manipulated with elements of diffraction (glass) and reflection (mirrors).

With this image I saw the possibility of using light as pieces of jewelry
I made an improvised photo-shooting set out of my living room. The photo editing was done with Adobe Photoshop CC 2019

I chose the Eras Light ITC font as it better fit what I was looking for with this brand. Elegance and simplicity.

I did several tests for the promotional banner, but they did not quite fit what I was looking for with my corporate image, so I discarded them. These are some of the tests

Synchronicity: An anecdote in this process
Playing with a prominent element in the name Surya, I sought to make a kind of sun with the lowercase ‘Y’. During the process I noticed that the bottom of the overlapping ‘y’ formed a Swastika. Checking its meaning in Hindu culture, I discovered that as I had it, it does indeed symbolize Surya
